The Practical Driving Test

When you take your practical driving test you will be asked to read a number plate with letters 79.4mm (3.1in) high at 20.5m. (Say 5 car lengths). The new style number plates introduced during 2001, should be read from a distance of 20 metres. Try that now and if you have difficulty see an optician. (if you fail this, your test will not continue).

After the eyesight test you will be examined on your general driving and on two reversing exercises. The reversing exercises will be chosen from:

  • reversing around a corner
  • turning in the road
  • reverse parking

You may also be asked to carry out an emergency stop exercise.

A standard driving test takes about 40 minutes.

The current practical driving test fee (From 30 March 2009) is £62.00

I am planning to give far more detailed information about the test here shortly. In the meantime don't hesitate to ask me if you have any queries.
